This predella compartment is listed in the Fototeca Everett Fahy (included in the Fototeca Federico Zeri) as no. 107000. The other two elements of the same predella are listed there as no. 106998 (St. Francis preaches before Pope Honorius III)* and no. 106999 (The preaching of St. Francis of Assisi). They describe three episodes in the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. Ours illustrates the Miracle of the Roses or The Temptation overcome at the Porziuncola. The saint, beset by lust, rolled in a thorn bush and his drops of blood were transformed into roses, which he then placed as an ex-voto which he then placed as an ex-voto on the altar of the Porziuncola. Bartolomeo di Giovanni began as a frequent collaborator of Bartolomeo di Giovanni in the 1480s. He seems to have been appreciated by his contemporaries for his ability to paint small figures or silhouettes or sculpted bas-relief elements in the decor. He also worked under the direction of Botticelli for the History of Nastaglio degli Onesti (Madrid, Prado Museum) or the figures in the background of of The Slander of Apelles (Florence, Uffizi Gallery), for example. The attribution to Bartolomeo di Giovanni, proposed by an ancient inscription on the frame, has been Andrea De Marchi, Everett Fahy and Matteo Gianeselli. The withdrawal of the lots will be done by appointment only on Friday, June 10, 2022 in Paris XVth (Metro Pasteur or Sèvres-Lecourbe) [The exact address will be communicated to you after full payment of the slip, when making the appointment].
