Armand-François-Paul des Friches Doria (1824 - 1896), was a French politician, patron and art collector. Count Doria acquired an important collection of impressionist paintings, many of which are now kept in museums in Europe and the United States. A great collector of Barye's animal bronzes, "To his friends who asked him "if he wanted to build a menagerie", he retorted by buying new bronzes from Barye (Album souvenir de la collection Armand Doria, Paris, 1899, pages 22 and 23). His collection, dispersed in an auction at the Georges Petit gallery in May 1899, brought in nearly one million francs. Only a few proofs are known of this model, which was not published; notably the proof in the Museum of Art in Baltimore (Lucas collection, MI 566), the one in the Fabre Museum in Montpellier (gift of A. de Bruyas, 876.3.81 and 876.3.82 as a pair), as well as the one in the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. (73.70 as a pair). Bibliography: -Poletti, M. and Richarme, A., BARYE, Catalogue raisonné des sculptures, Gallimard, 2000.
