LIN FENGMIAN (1900-1991)
Series of the opera: The Peony Pavilion. Oil on canvas. Signed lower left. Size at sight: 51,5 x 43,5 cm. Framed under glass. LIN Fengmian (1900-1991), born in China during the Qing dynasty, in Merxian, Guangdong province, is one of the most illustrious artist, educator and theoretician of Chinese art of the 20th century. Born into a family of stonecutters, he began to paint when he was only five years old. He lost his mother at the age of seven. At fifteen, he passed his entrance exam to the provincial school of Meizhou. He was one of the first Chinese artists to study in France from 1918 to 1925, first in Dijon, then in Paris. On his return to China, he held several important official positions: president of the National Academy of Arts in Beijing, director of the Academy of Arts in Hangzhou. During about 80 years of artistic creation, LIN Fengmian has acquired a national notoriety since his youth. He has also lived through the cruellest periods: from August 1968 to December 1972, he was imprisoned and mistreated. He enjoyed international fame during his last years. Despite the ups and downs of life, LIN Fengmian remained faithful to his principles, stated at the age of 36: love nature, stay away from money and fame, be observant, work diligently to be a true artist. Wanting to be different from other famous Chinese painters of the 20th century, such as QI Baishi, XU Beihong or HUANG Binhong, LIN Fengmian sought to create a style that would be distinct from both traditional Chinese painting and modern Western painting. In his quest for a perfect fusion between these two genres of art, he chose the most difficult path and succeeded. Perhaps this is why the few internationally known modern Chinese painters, such as Zao Wou-Ki, Wu Guanzhong and Chu Teh-Chun, are all students of LIN Fen.
