Van Gulik, (1910-1967)
Two erotic prints after Ming period plates, interior scenes, one in polychrome representing a woman and a man sitting, during the first stages of delight, a young woman watching them with a naughty look; the other, in red ink, a naked couple at tea time sitting on a table before the carnal union. Only in bookstores. Size 33,3 x25,6 cm. Van Gulik, a Dutch scholar and polyglot, published various works on the lute and Chinese painting, as well as novels that he translated from Chinese. Then, inspired by old Chinese stories, Van Gulik wrote seventeen fictional detective stories, cases solved by his judge Ti, which introduced the Western reader to many aspects of social life in ancient China. The acquisition of an album of erotic engravings from the Ming dynasty led him to take an interest in Chinese eroticism and in 1962 he published "La vie sexuelle dans la Chine antique", translated into French in 1971.
