During his stay in Morocco with the Comte de Mornay in 1832, Delacroix sketched scenes of daily life. Our drawing is typical of these on-the-spot watercolors: "I gradually insinuate myself into the ways of the country, so as to be able to draw many of these Mores figures to my heart's content. They are very prejudiced against the fine art of painting, but a few silver coins here and there fix their scruples" ("Correspondance générale d'Eugène Delacroix", ed. André Joubin, Paris, 1936-38, vol. I, p.175)
