Through the works assembled by Jean CHARBONNEAUX and Daniel TERNOIS, respectively grandfather and father of the current owners, the TERNOIS - CHARBONNEAUX collection illustrates both their shared passion for Art History and the many bonds of friendship and sympathy they forged with artists throughout their careers.
The career of Jean Charbonneaux (1895-1969) was marked by his deep commitment to classical archaeology and his involvement in the preservation of heritage and museums.
A professor of Greek and Roman archaeology at the École du Louvre until 1965, he was also appointed chief curator of Greek and Roman antiquities at the Musée du Louvre from 1945 to 1964. During this period, he played a major role in the enrichment and understanding of the museum's collections.
Jean Charbonneaux also contributed to the dissemination of archaeological knowledge by founding and later becoming editor-in-chief of the "Revue des Arts-Musées de France" from 1951 to 1960. It was in this context that he approached the sculptor Henri Laurens to illustrate the cover of the magazine with one of his drawings, and obtained from the artist the sculpture "Femme à l'oiseau" (1927) (Lot 22 of the sale) by way of thanks.
He was also co-author of three of the four volumes of "L'Univers des Formes" devoted to the history of Greek art. These works, covering the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic periods, remain essential references for researchers and enthusiasts of Greek art.
A widely recognized figure who was made a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres in 1962, his contributions to museums and academic institutions have left a lasting legacy in Greek and Roman art history and archaeology.
Daniel Ternois (1924-2024) distinguished himself through his career in conservation and university teaching of art history.
He began his career as curator of the Musée Ingres in Montauban, where he served from 1951 to 1962. During this period, Daniel Ternois made friends with a number of artists, including the painter François Desnoyer, then exhibited in the museum, who offered him some of his works as a gift of friendship (Lots 24 and 25 of the sale).
Daniel Ternois went on to become Director of Research at the CNRS and Professor of Art History at the Faculté des Lettres de Lyon II, before joining the Université de Paris I Sorbonne as Professor Emeritus from 1986 to 1991.
Alongside his academic career, Daniel Ternois was involved in a number of learned societies and was a member of the Comité des travaux historiques et scientifiques. His involvement in these institutions reflects his dedication to the advancement of art history in France.
