20th-century furniture and decorative arts are often in the spotlight during our auctions at DROUOT. Whether it’s the great creators of ART NOUVEAU, ART DECO, or MODERNISM: EMILE GALLÉ, LELEU, Jacques-Emile RUHLMANN, Pierre CHAREAU, André GROULT, Paul FOLLOT, Armand-Albert RATEAU, Pierre LEGRAIN, Paul DUPRÉ-LAFON, Charlotte PERRIAND, LE CORBUSIER, Eileen GRAY, Marcel BREUER, René COULON, Jean-Michel FRANK, Robert MALLET-STEVENS, René HERBST, Jean PERZEL, Michel ROUX SPITZ, such as this pair of end tables from the GREYSTONES family residence in DINARD, sold for €25,000, MAISON DOMINIQUE... Or those from the 40s and 50s, the SIXTIES, SEVENTIES, EIGHTIES, such as Jean ROYERE, Jean PROUVE, Mathieu MATEGOT, Serge MOUILLE, Pierre CHAPO... or the big names in international design, FRENCH, AMERICAN, ITALIAN, SCANDINAVIAN, and DANISH: OLIVIER MOURGUE, Roger TALLON, GAROUSTE ET BONETTI, Philippe STARK, GAE AULENTI with her iconic PIPISTRELLO, Eero SAARINEN with his TULIP furniture, a highly sought-after 70s design by our bidders, ALVAR AALTO, HANS WEGNER, Ray and Charles EAMES and their LONG CHAIR with OTTOMAN, Ron ARAD with his LOOP LOOM lounge chair, George NELSON, Harry BERTOIA and his DIAMOND wire chairs. Many of these designs were successfully produced by KNOLL.
Their iconic creations are countless: COFFEE TABLES, SIDEBOARDS, BUFFETS, STOOLS, CHAIRS, ARMCHAIRS and SOFAS, BOOKSHELVES, CONSOLES, LIGHTING, CARPETS... and can be found in the catalogs of our PARISIAN INTERIORS sales on DROUOTLIVE or DROUOTONLINE.
MORAND & MORAND is often assisted in these sales by their Expert in 20th-century and contemporary Decorative Arts, Côme REMY, accredited by the Sales Council and Insurance, who shares his long experience in this market:
"Thirty years ago, I did my first internship with an auctioneer, and it’s notable that contemporary items were always present... Even if the interior was often classic, furnished with 18th-century creations, there were here and there 20th-century objects, vases by Emile Gallé or the Daum brothers, sometimes glassworks, or even a Roger Tallon watch... We know that 'the coffee table' didn’t exist in the Age of Enlightenment, and newlyweds went to Jean Royère to place their coffee cups, perhaps even designed by Jean Luce! Some kept memories of their parents' modernity, with Puiforcat silverware or Mallet-Stevens chairs as at the ‘Luco’... or even ‘dad’s desk’ by Ruhlmann or Leleu. In this perfectly bourgeois setting, there was always at least a Thonet stool or some other 'design' object in the kitchen, and occasionally a ‘Tulip’ table by Eero Saarinen produced by Knoll... at least a Stark bottle opener! Conversely, fans of 50s or 60s contemporary design, whose inventory we might do another day, were fully furnished in Scandinavian style, with Alvar Aalto or Finn Juhl pieces illuminated by a 'Artichoke' chandelier by Poul Henningsen... Those who stayed loyal to French design were often clients of the famous Steph Simon gallery, where we often find tripods by Charlotte Perriand, Jean Prouvé’s 'Standard' chair, Serge Mouille lighting, and black satin-glazed ceramics by Jouve. Of course, when you’re very lucky, you enter legendary interiors, like the hotel at 118 Rue du Faubourg St Honoré, home to Henri Samuel, where I did an inventory and later the sale in 1996... The famous 'French Touch' of 'the greatest decorator of the century,' blending Roentgen and Giacometti tables, Hiquily and Sené chairs, Rougemont and Jean de Bologne sculptures in the famous salon with white neoclassical woodwork highlighted in gold and orange velvet drapes!
For a single small object, like a tray by Matégot, or a complete collection, it’s a constantly renewed pleasure. The last sale with Me Morand featured lacquer pieces by Gaston Suisse and a lamp by César for Daum, surrounding wrought-iron furniture attributed to Subes... Could this soon be in your home?"
