Auguste RODIN (Paris 1840- Meudon 1917) Cambodian... - Lot 40 - Morand & Morand
Auguste RODIN (Paris 1840- Meudon 1917) Cambodian dancer, circa 1906-1907 Watercolor and gouache over pen and brown ink, reproduced in black pencil Dimensions: 30.5 x 20.2 cm Signed lower right "Aug. Rodin". Beneath the watercolor at top left is another position of the arm sketched in an upward movement. Tears at top left, tears at edges. King Sisowath of Cambodia made an official visit to France for the Marseille Colonial Exhibition. He was accompanied by the Royal Khmer Ballet. In July 1906, Rodin attended a performance of the ballet at the Pré-Catelan. He was immediately captivated by the dancers, whom he followed all the way to Marseille: "I contemplated them in ecstasy," he told Louis Vauxcelles. What a void they left me! When they left, I was in the cold shadow, and I thought they were taking away the beauty of the world... I followed them to Marseille: I would have followed them to Cairo! Rodin drew them frantically, producing a series of around one hundred and fifty drawings of Cambodian dancers. Mrs. Buley-Uribe divides the execution of our watercolor into two phases: a first pen-and-ink drawing taken on the spot in July 1906, when Rodin saw the dancers of the Ballet Royal in Marseille, followed by an enrichment in watercolor and black pencil some six months later, when Rodin worked with the Japanese actress Hanako. This two-stage approach can be seen in one of the dancers in the Musée Rodin (D4487, dimensions 30.6 x 20.4 cm), reproduced in Antoinette Le Normand Romain and Cristina Buley-Uribe, "Auguste Rodin Dessins et aquarelles", ed. Hazan, Paris, 2006, no. 303, repr. p.395). Our unpublished watercolor of a Cambodian dancer is probably the last one currently in private hands. A notice of inclusion in the catalog raisonné of Auguste Rodin's drawings by Mme Buley-Uribe, dated 11 May 2023, will be given to the buyer.
