Jean COCTEAU (1889-1963) - Lot 24
Jean COCTEAU (1889-1963) Grand chêvre-cou (1958) Proof in pink clay, enamels: black, white, yellow and red. Signed below the base Jean Cocteau à l'étoile, dated 1958, marked Atelier Madeline-Jolly and justified 16/20. Dimensions: 56.7 x 35 x 13 cm Bibliography: A. Guédras, Jean Cocteau: Poteries catalog des céramiques 1957 - 1963, n° 292 NB: One of the two copies R.2101 was offered by Jean Cocteau to Mrs. Alec Weisweiller - Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. An original certificate of authenticity signed by Marie-Madeleine Jolly and Philippe Madeline, dated November 14, 1958, will be given to the buyer. Reference texts: "Le Faune au long cou was finished, sitting on the studio table by the road. Perhaps I'll find weaknesses in it when other objects of the same order compete with it. But, at first glance, this vase has a new style and is capable of producing a shock. The Madelines have made it in pale pink terracotta, without using eye enamel. We'll try the glaze after firing. The important thing now is that the object holds up. The second proof tilted, and as Madeline had laid it down, hoping that the neck would return to its straight shape, the head fell to the floor. I'd brought my latest models. Madeleine Jolly will execute five of them and order the shapes". Le Passé Défini, 1958 "We worked for up to two hours on the goat-foot, which I found a little simple, a little suspect in stylization. By dint of persevering with the smallest details, the long-necked character ended up taking on the noble style of Negro and Chinese works."
